Most people who fail in remote work fail in Module 1 โ not because they lack skill, but because they didn't understand what they were signing up for. This week is about building the right base: mindset, digital identity, communication, tools, and discipline.
The mindset shift that makes everything else possible
Remote work is not "trabaho habang nakahiga." It is a professional commitment โ a full job, with hours, accountability, and performance standards โ that happens to take place wherever you are.
International clients expect the same level of professionalism โ sometimes higher โ than an in-office employee. What they cannot see, they measure through your output, your response time, and your communication.
From: "Sana mapasok ako."
To: "I am building a professional track record."
This shift sounds small. It is not. Every decision you make from here โ how you write an email, whether you respond within 5 minutes, whether you finish a task on time โ comes from which version of that sentence you believe.
Write 3 honest reasons you want to do remote work. Not the polished version. Not "para sa pamilya ko" as a reflex โ the real reasons. Financial need, time freedom, boredom with your current situation, wanting to prove something to yourself. These reasons will keep you going when it starts to feel hard partway through.
Your email address is your first handshake
"crushyour2009@gmail.com" tells a client something. "mariasantos.va@gmail.com" tells them something completely different. You haven't spoken yet, and they've already formed an impression.
Your digital identity is everything a client sees before they meet you: your email address, your profile photo, your LinkedIn headline, even your WhatsApp display name. These are your suit and tie before the interview.
Create or clean up your Gmail with a professional format. Then take a new profile photo using the guidelines above. Post it in the Alpha Academy Facebook Group as your introduction โ name, location, and one sentence about why you're here.
You don't need to sound like a native. You need to communicate clearly.
International clients do not expect you to speak like a native English speaker. They expect you to communicate clearly, professionally, and without ambiguity. There is a difference between perfect grammar and professional communication โ and the second one matters far more.
When a client messages you during work hours, respond within 5 minutes โ even if you don't have the full answer yet. A simple: "Got it, I'm on it โ I'll update you by [time]." This alone separates you from 80% of candidates.
Write a 3โ4 sentence email introducing yourself to a hypothetical international client. Include: your name, one sentence about your background, one sentence about what you can do for them, and a professional closing. Post it in the group for feedback.
What you actually need to start โ and what you don't
Go to speedtest.net and run a test. Note your download and upload speeds. Post your results in the group โ this is your baseline. Then identify: what is your backup plan if your internet goes down during work hours? Name a specific cafรฉ, library, or neighbor's WiFi. Write it down.
Organize once. Work clearly forever.
Nothing important should live only on your device. Devices fail, get stolen, run out of storage. Google Drive is free and unlimited for your purposes. Every piece of work you do should be saved in the cloud immediately โ not after you finish, while you work.
Create one master folder in Google Drive: "Remote Work". Inside it, create four subfolders:
Create the "Remote Work" folder in Google Drive with the four subfolders. Take a screenshot and post it in the group. Then go back through Lessons 1โ4 and make sure all tasks are completed. Module 1 is your foundation โ don't move to Module 2 with unfinished tasks.
5 questions · Score 4 or more to unlock the next module
1. What is the MINIMUM internet speed required to start in remote work?
2. When a client messages you during work hours, you should acknowledge within ___.
3. Which email address is most professional?
4. What does 'cloud-first' mean for remote workers?
5. The mindset shift in Module 1 is: from 'Sana mapasok ako' to ___.
You've built the foundation. Mindset, identity, communication, equipment, and workspace โ these are the ground everything else stands on. Module 2 starts the tools and skills that clients actually pay for.
These are the tools international clients use every day. You will too. The goal this week is not to master everything โ it's to be functional and confident enough to learn the rest on the job.
More than just sending email
Every email you send should have a signature. Format:
[Your Full Name]
Remote Professional ยท [Your Niche, e.g., Operations & Admin]
[Your Email] ยท [Your Phone/WhatsApp]
Go to Gmail Settings โ General โ Signature. Create your professional signature. Then create three labels: "Action Required," "Waiting For," and your first client's name (use "Sample Client" if you don't have one yet). Screenshot and share in the group.
The skill most specialists underestimate
Your client says "meeting at 2 PM." 2 PM where? This is one of the most common early mistakes. Always confirm the time zone โ and always convert it to Philippine Standard Time (PST/PHT, UTC+8) before putting it in your calendar.
In Google Calendar settings, add Philippine Standard Time as primary and US Eastern Time as secondary. Schedule a hypothetical meeting for "9 AM EST next Monday" โ what time is that in Manila? Post your answer in the group.
Create. Track. Report.
In Google Sheets, build a simple tracker with these columns: Full Name, Company, Email, Phone, Status (Active/Inactive/Lead), Last Contacted, Notes. Add 3 sample contacts. Use a filter on the "Status" column. Share the link (View only) in the group.
How each works and when to use them
Download and create free accounts for both Zoom and Slack. Set up your profile with your professional photo on both. In Zoom, practice joining a test meeting (zoom.us/test) and check that your audio and camera work. Post a screenshot of your Slack profile in the group.
Not to replace your thinking โ to extend it
Claude (claude.ai) and ChatGPT (chatgpt.com) are AI assistants that can help you: draft emails and documents, summarize long texts, research topics, brainstorm ideas, and check your writing for clarity. Both are free to start.
Go to claude.ai (free). Ask it: "Write a professional email to a client letting them know that the weekly report will be delayed by 2 hours due to data issues, and give them a new delivery time of 4 PM." Read the output. Edit it to sound more like you โ change 2โ3 things. Post both the AI version and your edited version in the group.

1. In Google Calendar, how many time zones should you display when working with international clients?
2. When editing a client's Google Doc, you should use ___ mode instead of editing directly.
3. What does the COUNTIF formula do in Google Sheets?
4. What is the recommended camera etiquette during client video calls?
5. What is the most important limitation of AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT?
You now have the tools every VA needs. Module 3 is where Alpha Academy separates itself โ the Operations Advantage is what makes you a premium candidate, not just another applicant.
This is Alpha Academy's signature module โ the thing neither Katam-Bray nor Bobo to VA teaches at this depth. We're not training task-takers. We're training people who think, anticipate, and solve. This week is the difference between a $5/hr VA and a $12/hr specialist.
The shift that changes everything
A task-taker waits to be told. An operations professional anticipates what needs to happen and acts before being asked.
Task-taker: "The technician's route is full. I'll let the client know."
Ops professional: "The technician's route is full. Before I tell the client, let me check: Is there another technician available? Can this be rescheduled to first thing tomorrow? What's the customer's urgency? I'll have options ready when I call."
Replace: "What should I do?"
With: "I tried X and Y. I think Z is the best path โ please confirm if you agree."
This is the single phrase that separates junior from senior in any remote role. Practice it until it feels natural.
Write down 3 examples from your own life where you solved a problem proactively โ without being asked. It could be at home (you noticed the gas was running low before your family did), at work, in your community. These are your operations instincts. They already exist. Post them in the group.
How professional businesses document their processes
SOP = Standard Operating Procedure. It is a step-by-step document that explains how a specific task is done, so that anyone โ regardless of experience โ can do it the same way every time.
Every well-run business has SOPs. When a client gives you an SOP, follow it exactly. When a client doesn't have one and asks you to figure out a process, write it down and share it back with them โ that is a high-value skill that most specialists never offer.
Write a simple SOP for something you do every day: making coffee, preparing Alpha's school bag (if you're a parent), or a household task you do routinely. 5โ8 steps. Use the format above. This is exactly what writing a work SOP feels like โ just with a different subject matter. Post it in Google Docs and share the link in the group.
The backbone of operations
Operations coordination is knowing: Where is everyone? What are they doing? What needs to happen next? Who has a problem? How do we fix it before it becomes a crisis?
In a home services business, this means tracking technicians, their jobs, their routes, and their availability โ all in real time, often with customers waiting.
In Google Sheets, create a simple tracker with these columns: Technician Name, Current Job, Location, ETA for Current Job, Next Job, Next Job Time, Status (Active / Available / Delayed). Add 3 sample technicians with fictional data. Post the link in the group.
The single discipline that separates serious specialists from everyone else
SLA = Service Level Agreement. A 5-minute SLA means every message gets an acknowledgment within 5 minutes during work hours. Not a full answer โ an acknowledgment.
"Got it, I'm checking now." โ 3 seconds to type. Changes everything.
In the home services industry, a customer message that waits 30 minutes for a response often results in a lost booking. The business that responds first gets the job. You โ as the dispatcher or VA โ are the reason they respond first or last.
Responsiveness is not just courtesy. It is revenue for your client. Understanding that is what makes you premium.
Set a timer for 5 minutes right now. Sit with this question: "If every client message in my career has a 5-minute clock, what would I need to change about how I use my phone and my time?" Write your honest answer โ what habits would need to shift? Post it in the group.
The skill that earns long-term clients
Never bring a client only a problem. Always bring: the problem, what you already tried, and your recommendation.
Bad: "The CRM is not syncing with the calendar." (Problem only)
Better: "The CRM is not syncing. I already tried logging out and reconnecting the integration โ still not working. I've checked their support page and found a known issue with the current version. Recommend we either wait for the update (ETA: Thursday) or manually sync for now. Which would you prefer?" (Problem + action already taken + recommendation)
Everything else: research first, present options, then ask for confirmation.
Scenario: You are a dispatcher. A customer messages to book an emergency repair. Your lead technician's route is full for the day. Using the framework above, write your full response โ what you tried, what you found, and your recommendation. Post it in the group for feedback from the AVS team and other members.
5 questions · Score 4 or more to unlock the next module
1. What is the KEY difference between a task-taker and an operations professional?
2. SOP stands for ___.
3. What does professional responsiveness during work hours mean?
4. When you encounter a problem at work, the best approach is ___.
5. In dispatching, 'priority' means ___.
You now think like an operations professional. That is what separates Alpha Academy graduates from general VA applicants. Module 4 is the final mile โ building your profile and walking through the door.
This is the week you transition from trainee to professional candidate. Build your profile, master your positioning, and prepare for your next steps with total clarity and confidence.
Your resume is a sales document
Every profile โ whether a resume, a portfolio, or a professional application โ must answer one question for the client: "Why should I hire this person for this specific role?" Everything that doesn't answer that question should be cut.
Write your headline + summary in a Google Doc. Keep the summary to 4 sentences maximum. Post it in the group for community and team feedback.
The honest criteria โ from real-world operations experience
Drawing from deep real-world operations experience with growing businesses, professional teams hold their talent pool to a rigorous standard. Here is what they actually look for โ not what sounds good in a training program.
Many international clients and agencies request a 1โ2 minute video introduction. No script. Just you, speaking naturally to the camera, sharing who you are, your background, and why you do this work.
Record a 60-second video of yourself. Not for submission โ just to practice. Cover: your name, where you're from, one thing about your background, and one thing you learned in this training that changed how you think about remote work. Watch it back. What would you change? Record a second take.
Most interviews are won or lost before they begin
"Tell me about a time you had to manage multiple deadlines or responsibilities at once." Answer using STAR format. If you don't have formal work experience, use a personal or community example. Real experience is real experience. Post in the group.
Know your worth. Know the market.
Do not name the lowest number you would accept as your opening rate. Name the rate that reflects the value you bring, and be prepared to justify it with your skills, training, and reliability record.
Before you name your rate, ask: "What budget are you working with for this role?" This is professional, establishes clarity, and protects your time.
Calculate: what hourly rate, working full-time (8hrs/day, 22 days/month), would give your family the income you need? Convert USD to PHP at today's rate. Write it in your training notes.
The path from first placement to long-term growth
Getting hired is just the starting line. Your first 60 days determine whether you become an indispensable long-term partner or a short-term contractor. High-performing specialists focus on consistency, communication, and proactive problem-solving.
Write down 3 concrete commitments you are making to yourself for your first 60 days on the job (e.g., "I will maintain a strict 5-minute acknowledgment SLA during work hours," "I will double-check all dispatch schedules before ending my shift"). Post them in the group.
